Finally sick, figures.

We’ve all had colds, light ones, since a day or so before Christmas. Well, they progressed to just drippy and sneezy and scratchy throat off and on for us, but for me, it’s gotten worse since Saturday. That evening I was feeling worse, and also had felt allergic more than sick, so I took some Benadryl for those symptoms, which was fine since I ended up having to eat something for dinner than had had mushrooms in it. My swollen tongue from that was bad, but minimal in comparison to past encounters. So I woke up Sunday morning dragging, and just Frank and Victoria went to church. Asa has had a clear dripping nose constnatly, and Russell having more symptoms than Victoria or Frank. So I felt much better later, but still not great. Then I felt feverish late afternoon, and I was sort of flush faced. It wasn’t raging fever though.

Well, today I’ve stayed in be all day, I just feel a bit achy, it’s cold downstairs and I didn’t feel like getting dressed for it, so I stayed on my bed. My throat hurts today worse, actual hurt instaed of scratchy. And I feel feverish again since 2pm, chills on occassion, and my forhead and nose feel beadingly moist from the heat.

Laptop computers are a wonderful thing in this case.

I have two cats curled up on my lap sleeping, and another one handing out right at my side, bathing, and my computer is beyond that lower on the bed, with my keyboard and mouse by my side, wireless. My ‘puter is always on wireless networking as well. Just not wireless for power ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve been doing stuff over at Rotten Tomatoes while I’ve been ill today, and some on previous days too. For the fun of it I started a journal there purely for movie reviews. I have plenty of other places for journals or blogs, it’s just that this one has a community of movie stuff, and I can keep all that movie stuff over there. Rotten Tomatoes is a place with lots of collected info on reviews and movie, game, DVD, info, etc. and the USER stuff is nice, for making journals, groups, forums, on topics, on particular movies or celebrities or just any topic, like someone could use it as a regular weblog or topical on something, anyway, it’s free, and just a new thing to play with.

So please pray for my recovery soon. I don’t know what to call this. I never was one to know what is a cold, what is flu, etc. This is day 6 of whatever it is, and it’s only gotten worse since 4 a bit, then more on day 5 now more even more on day 6. Just a general achy-ish feeling, achy throat, flushed feeling, chills off and on. Definitley NOT that “run over by a truck” feeling— yet.

I haven’t done anything for this yet, but Frank is going to get me some Vit C, tomato soup, and cough drops for my throat. I’ll go nuts with the Vit. C. believe me. Maybe some garlic too. Tomato soup is always my favorite, particularly when sick. It cures every ache and pain. Nearly.

If there are typos in this, please forgive and overlook them. My computer is actually further away from me than I’d prefer, with all these cats, I can’t quite get the right foucs on the screen for good typing as I go, nor oroof reading. Oh well. Later I’m sure I’ll care enough to get that done. ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. Thanks Tamara! I will say that today has been better for me, I’ve stayed in bed though, just to be sure. It’s definite that my throat is not as bad. It’s definite that I haven’t sneezed even once today. My drippy stuffiness isn’t quite as bad. And I’ve had no chills or flushed feelings today. ๐Ÿ™‚

The past two days it was always worse by 4pm until into the evening … that “cranky time” for all babies – time. I was told when I was very young that it’s “normal” to be at your lowest during that time of the day, it’s when immunities go down, temperments get edgy, etc. I’ve since read that temperatures go up too, and that’s why one would feel flushed but not have a “fever” per se, but be on the edge of it, since the body is fighting something and it’s “that time of the day” as well.

So I’m much happier today to see that it’s in that time and I’m not that bad! My throat doesn’t hurt to swallow, just a tad. The worst offender is that tickle in the throat every so often. Now that I think of it, it’s the last thing to leave, it keeps an extended visit, that post nasal tickly drip, after some illnesses. The one that make you sputter and cough and I so don’t like it in church, for instance!

I’ve taken lots of Vit C since last evening, so it helped, or lent a hand at least, to the battle. I’m going to keep using it now. I used to do that, got away from it this year for some reason.

Well I need to get better, I have little ones to take care of, they are running around like wild indians to day, and Asa is sounding really stuffy now, he’s probably getting worse. ๐Ÿ™ So I’ll be on my feet tomorrow more. It was nice to relax for a couple of days, but now I have to pay for it! \O/

Frank talked to the pharmacist at the grocery store yesterday, he said she said “Oh, she’d know if it was the flu!” Apparently I don’t have any such thing. I’m not well aquainted with it, can’t recall ever having what is said to be “the flu”. Days and days and days of high fever, throwing up … ick. 24 or 48 hour viruses, yes. Not more than that. I thank God immensely for that! Stay healthy, as can be! Glad to know we aren’t the only ones dealing with miseries that aren’t so terribly miserable, just plain miserable. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Oooh I hope you feel better SOON!! What a bummer! Stay away from those mushrooms too! My hubby is allergic to practically everything so I can relate to a degree. I hope 2004 is a blessed, happy and HEALTHY year for you all!!

  3. BTW…it’s nice to “meet” you too! I also added a few more “chicken pics” to our photo album. The link is on my journal right above my entries. I agree that chickens are very fascinating and a lot smarter than people give them credit for! They’re so funny to watch too!! Right now we have 12 egg-layers and 5 meat chickens although we’re praying that come next spring they will certainly “be fruitful and multiply!” ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. Rebekah,

Hens laying this time of year, depends on your hens, where you live, what they live in, their age, etc.

If you get cold temperatures, (which you do, right?) most hens will at least slow down during that time. Stress will have them slowing down too. Like, if you get hens that haven’t laid yet, it could be awhile before they start, as the stress of a new environment may cause delay.

We pasture our hens, and have no heater or light, or heat lamp for them. They laid eggs until mid November, and it was slacking off a bit then, but not until the did it suddenly slack off, and my Leghorns started molting. Not all birds will do that at this time of their lives. There isn’t anything totally scientific about laying, when the hen is ready, she’ll begin laying. She’ll molt when conditions say to her she should.

Our Aracanua-Wyandotte mix (Golden-Laced) suddenly began molting less than a week ago. The other three Wyandottes aren’t laying, but not losing feathers either, yet.

I know that there are people in cold areas that have their hens laying in the Winter. Some of them force it by having artificial light every day, which is part of the laying cycle (they need about 14 hours of light a day for good laying). People that keep their hens inside, in a barn or coop that’s insulated will have a different experience with their hens, than I do.

Some people, like I do, allow their hens to naturally just lay eggs when they are ready. I give them laying crumbles and water, and they eat bugs and grass. I will switch to whole grains one of these days, instead of laying crumbles.

So there are then people that force their bird to molt, or that at least separate molting birds out of the flock and treat them differently. Higher protein and darkness.

I just let the hens eat and live just like any other day of the year. She’ll not get “burned out” on egg laying, therefore. When their body is molting, they stop laying, and they eat as much as they want of their normal fare. When they are ready to resume laying, they will.

Did I just confuse the issue? LOL

If your hens are of the right age to lay, but aren’t yet, they might be waiting for warmer temps or more light, or something that you just can’t help her with. Time is the greatest aide in chicken laying eggs. Our youngest four hens started laying much later than our oldest hens. Leghorns were all laying by about 20 weeks of age.

The mixed Wyandotte started laying first, then two more Wyandottes, then the last one seemed to hold out another month or so after that. That would put them in the 26-28 week age range when most of them started laying.

I hope I’m not muddying this up more. ๐Ÿ™‚

How I’m feeling too, it’s up and down. I think we are on a second version of this virus thing, and it’s trying to settle as chest congestion. We are fighting it well though, that’s why we feel so bad, yet not. ๐Ÿ™‚
